The folks that are living their dream have never blamed the economy for anything.

1. There are an infinite number of ways to accomplish your goal. Are you willing to sacrifice to achieve it? If not, why do it?

2. Quit whining and start doing. The economy has never kept anyone from doing anything. It’s simply a lousy and mentally lazy excuse.

3. YOU control your attitude. How high do you want to go?

4. Be sure to track your progress so you’ll be motivated to get there.

You’ve heard the phrase “There’s more than one way to skin a cat.” While both gross and mean to cats, the principal of the phrase rings ever true, especially when paired with the phrase “…with the economy the way that it is.”

The truth is, there is always another way to accomplish what you want to do. That way may not be as easy or as comfortable as you’d like, but if what you what to do is worth your time and worth your effort, it's worth it to accomplish your goal without debt.

It’s easy to make excuses why we think we can’t do something. What I’ve found is that most of the time “what we think” is just not true. We simply don’t give ourselves credit for what we CAN accomplish with limited resources.
The challenge is to find a way to do what you can with what you already have right now today. The trap is to set up our own mental hurdles by telling ourselves we can’t move closer to our goal. That’s the kind of negative self talk that keeps us in a rut.

If you want something you’ve never had, you must do something you’ve never done. In other words, if you keep doing what you've been doing, you’re going to keep getting what you've been getting.

And by the way, if living your dream was easy, everybody would be living their dream. It’s hard work so that the wimps get weeded out and the hard workers get rewarded with the fruits of their labor.

The solution is attitude. Guess who is in control of your attitude? It’s not your boss, not your coworkers, not your partner, not your circumstances, and certainly not the economy. It’s YOU. Yes Virginia, you are in control of your attitude.

So, now that we know that your attitude determines your altitude, what attitude do you wish to have?
I hear a lot of complaints and excuses when I ask my friends to define and confront their career dreams. The phrase, “I can’t doe X because Y” has become all to familiar in our discussions.

My new response to that from today on will be, “I am uninterested in what you say (think) you CAN’T do. I am however, very interested in what you CAN do.”

So, what CAN you do in the next 10 minutes, in the next hour, in the next calendar day, that will move you closer to your goals whatever they may be? Write it down, put it on the calendar, track your progress and most importantly DO IT!
Writing down your progress motivates you to keep going until you are living your dream. Make a list of all the small steps it will take to get you there and start checking them off. Ready, set, GO.

Are you already doing something like this? If so, please comment with your experiences. Thanks for reading!

Success Metric

My wife teaches piano to buy our groceries and fund our sons ESA (Educational Savings Account). Each student gets one lesson per week, four per month. She told me last night that the things that suck the life out of her and suck the fun out of what she does are students that don’t want to be there and parents that don’t care either. I asked her how many lessons it takes for her to know that a student is not serious about learning to love the piano the way she does. She said, “I can tell after 3 lessons.” The students progress is proof that they are internally motivated to learn what she teaches them. It is also proof that there is a support person (usually a parent) that creates a supportive environment around them that is conducive to practicing, learning, and progressing. I had an idea for her business. All current students and new students will undergo a one month (four lesson) assessment period during which Kacey will decided whether or not to keep the prospective student on. Qu...
